PostSubject: pull up competition at school   Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:52 am

Maybe you guys can help me out. In a odd way I got involved in a
pull up competition at my school. “I’m training to be a mechanic.”

We have about 32 students in class and during our breaks
we sometimes go outside to chat and get a breath of fresh air.
In the corner of our parking lot there is a stand that’s supposed
to be for removing engines from cars. It’s about 8 feet tall and
has a I-beam running across the top portion with a place for a
small crane to be added at the top.

One afternoon there were about six of us guys standing outside
and someone asks how many pull ups can you guys do? Since
the top is a I-beam you have to hold on with your fingers, sort
of like doing a pull up on a rafter. This whole thing has started
a big competition in my class and even the man who delivers
our parts has got involved. He trains MMA as a hobby and is
always training pull ups and chin ups.

I need some help getting my pull-up numbers to go up. At the
end of this semester I would love to be the pull up champion
of my class Very Happy

Combine volume training with failure type training. Also use weight, variations, and different techniqes. Focus on pullups, avoid stuff like lat pulldowns because they do not help you with pullups. Do more back training than push training for these reasons:
1)You want to be pullup master, so obviusly you need to do a lot of pullup work
2)The back is the biggest strongest muscle in your upperbody, and if your back is strong, so is your whole body.(remember for life)

Hope this helps! Very Happy

Yeah I have been doing a lot of reading on here and will try
some of the drop sets, pyramids etc. I want to get a good
weight vest too.

Weight vest is great from what I have heard. If you have a backpack that you don't mind abusing, you can put some weight in there and use that for the time being.

i find Grease the Groove rlly effective for increasing pullup number. u might like to do that besides ur daily workout. basically the idea is to install a pullup bar on ur room door and whenever u walk pass it u do about 1/2 or 3/4 of ur max no. of pullups. another advice would be eating as much as u can u'll need all the nutrients and calories if ure serious about this.

One thing I did for a while was do six sets of pullups, six days a week, at a comfortable number, and added a rep and a set each week.

Like 6x5 the first week, 7x6 the second week, 8x7 the third week, and so on.

I was also doing other workouts at the time, and gaining weight, so if your weight is constant you might be able to add reps faster.
