PostSubject: Grips and sets question   Fri Apr 29, 2011 4:06 pm

Just wondering what is better changing the grip every set or doing some sets with 1 grip then changing the grip and doing some sets again ... The same for push ups; Also what are the benefits of doing slow and of doing fast exercises (pull ups, push ups). Thanks in advance Very Happy

Just play around with the grips, you can't make anything wrong =P

To the difference between slow and fast motions:
In your body your muscles are made of three different kinds of fibers.

1) Type I - Those are slow-twitch muscles, that are contracting slower then the other ones. They are efficient at using oxygen to create energy without lactic acid buildup. To sum it up - those are not really weak, but they are just slower then the other fibers, but the ones with a high endurance.

2) Type IIa - These fibers are a mix between Type I and Type IIb fibers. They have a high contraction rate, so they are for the hard/strong movements where explosiveness is important, and yet efficient. They are used in almost all normal movements

3) Type IIb- these are the PURE fast-twitch fibers, that contract very very quickly making them very strong and explosive, but they also tire out very easily.

So - if you are doing something slow, you are training your endurance and your Type I fibers and if you are doing for instance fast pull ups, you are training Type II fibers and the explosive power of your muscles.

Hope it helped!

Haha! I personally just mix em up. I have some days where I do explosive bodyweight exercises (fast ones) and some days with slow ones. I guess it won't really hurt if you try both of them at the same time! Just try to balance your exercises so you get the best of both worlds.
