Can you gain weight and put on mass training with Calisthenics?

or does it depend on nutrition?

Would you have to do weighted calisthenic exercises in order to gain size?

I believe with proper nutrition you could get some weight, but it depends on your body.

yes you can gain muscle mass through calisthenics - look at most of us on here!

nutrition plays a massive part too - eat the right foods and lots of it! - look in the nutrition section for ideas.

you can do weighted calisthenics if you wanted to, i do both, as does most others here.

Yes, have a look at the pictures thread in the General Discussion forum and you will see that most people who have been working out for a couple years are packing some decent heat. The thing about calisthenics is that it stops you from gaining unnecessary, unhelpful mass. Who wants tree trunk thighs, for example, that allow you to do little more than mince and waddle around the gym from one machine to another?

agreed - you build "functional muscle" - not like bloated sted heads who can't move properly.

A cyclist? Kickboxer? Wrestler? Rugby player?

The truth is you can choose to go for maximum mass (hypertrophy) just with callisthenics alone if you design your training program to do that. Or you can train absolute strength with very little increase in muscle mass. It will just depend on the intensity, rep ranges, volume of sets etc.

Not everyone has the same goals. Learn to accept that.
Large legs can be very powerful when it comes to sports. Football players, weightlifters, sprinters, are all very strong and athletic. I don't think you'd see them 'waddling around a gym from one machine to the next'. I'm talking about 30+ inch standing vertical jumps, 4.5 second 40 yard dashes, and many other feats that simply can't be accomplished without weights.

Bodyweight training can take you far, but for optimal development of the lower body, you should use weights. Squats, deadlifts, olympic lift derviatives(power cleans, power snatch, etc.). kettlebell swings, etc. can all be very useful.

For upper body development, nothing comes close to the level of development that bodyweight strength moves provide.

I agree with most of what you said but the 4.5 40yard dash and 30+inch vertical can and have been accomplished without weights. I understand they could help those who can't do that to one day get there though.

You can build incredible strength, but size wise, not much. Not a bad thing, some people don't want bigger muscles.

When I was 18 I had a 36 inch vertical jump and I could run the 40 in 5.3 seconds.

I never used weights in highschool and placed 2nd in a slam dunk contest.

Currently, I do work with weights, just dead lifts and olympic movements. I think the combination of both calisthenics and power movements work great. Because, in real life situations you are going to have to pick things up (people) and move them around or throw them. not just your body.
