Thanks! This is something I should try as I usually just kick up to a handstand from the floor. This looks better going up from the crow. Looks like it would work the lower back more.

Awesome tutorial! Just one question, how much practice is enough do you think? I do them twice a week at the end of my workout (12 sets of 5 attempts at the end of static hold days). I feel like im getting it but do you think i need to do it more often? Thanks

If you can kick up with relative ease, you are ready to try pressing into it from the crow. I'm still working on the free standing handstand push-up. I've gotten it a few times but usually i fall at the top.

Thanks! As I said in the article, I think daily practice is the best way to get better at handstands. Having said that, if you're making progress at twice a week, then keep it up!

Nice video Al. I would like to work on handstands as well. My biggest thing is over shooting and recovering. In your video you seem to be able quickly turn almost 90 degrees to avoid flopping on your back.

When I over shoot I seem to crash and burn hard. I need to practice a graceful bail out. Smile

Thanks, Duf! Keep practicing and you'll get it eventually. It helps to tape yourself and watch it back to see what you need to work on, although it seems that you have already identified your main problem.

Keep training hard!

This is great - thanks! I've got a question about those graceful bailouts too... I'm at the point where I feel I should be starting to move away from the wall, but am scared of smashing into the ground. To get out of it so gracefully is it just technique, or do you need a lot of upper body strength? I can't do a HSPU, or really walk my hands around much - do you still think I could do it? Also, I read somewhere that one technique if you fall backwards is to roll out of it - what do you think about that? Your way looks by far the safest though!

Thanks Smile

Handstands require both strength AND skill. Keep practicing - getting a solid freestanding handstand is a very slow process for most people.

I've got a new book coming out very soon that has a whole chapter devoted to handbalancing. The book will be out in a few weeks. Check out this little teaser in the meantime: http://www.alkavadlo.com/2012/02/raising-the-bar-cover/

Thanks for your reply.

So at what point should I start moving away from the wall and trying to do them in an open space? Should I be able to do a HSPU first?

There are no universal answers to these questions. You'll be ready when you are ready. Wink

Damn man, that's a really cryptic answer! Haha!

But I think I know where you're coming from. Just gotta keep training Smile

Thanks again - have a great weekend.
